I guess you don´t want any more cakes and you´re looking for something savory and small to make for New Year´s Eve. I like the best savory appetizers made with puff pastry since it is very variable and when you buy an already rolled out puff pastry, appetizers are prepared in a minute. This time, I combined a puff pastry with cheese and fresh spinach and made Spinach and Cheese Pinwheels. You don´t need many ingredients to make them and they´re prepared and baked very quickly. The amount of garlic is up to you since I don´t like it very much, I used only a bit, just the right amount so even the people who don´t like garlic could eat it. Then, I also used fresh spinach because I don´t like the frozen one and besides traditional semi-hard cheese, you will need also cream cheese. Thanks to cream cheese filling, pinwheels are creamy and not dry. Creamy filling and crispy pastry are a great match and pinwheels will look amazing on you New Year´s Eve dinner table.
Jump to Recipe- 1 packet of puff pastry
- 60 g spinach
- 200 g cream cheese
- 3 tbsp sour cream
- 1 clove big of garlic
- A pinch of salt
- A pinch of black pepper
- 200 g semi-hard cheese (eidam, gouda)
- Egg to brush the pastry

Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface into a rectangle shape.

Wash the spinach and cut it into small pieces.

Mix it with the cream cheese, the sour cream and the clove of garlic chopped into small pieces. Stir well.

Add the salt and the black pepper, stir well.

Spread a layer of the mixture over the pastry while leaving about 0,5 cm of free space around the edges.

Grate cheese with a big grater and sprinkle it over the mixture.

Roll down the pastry from top to bottom so the log is long, not thick.

Brush the top of the puff pastry with the beaten egg.

Cut the log into pinwheels, with the thickness 0,7 to 1 centimeter.

Put pinwheels on a baking pan, covered with baking paper, horizontally – with the filling up. Brush each pinwheel with the beaten egg again.

Bake at 180 degrees for about 20 minutes or until golden-brown.
